AP INTRODUCES TRACKING SYSTEM TO CURB EXPLOITATION OF ITS NEWS CONTENT

BEIJING, Oct 9(Bernama)--Associated Press(AP) is introducing a news
registry, a rights management and tracking system, to curb exploitation of its
news content by third parties without input and permission.

AP president and chief executive officer, Tom Curley told media leaders
attending the World Media Summit here today that its 'AP3P' or "Protect, Point
and Pay" news registry would manage the effort.

"The news registry will enabe participating publishers to share mutually in
new licensing opportunity whether based on subscriptions or advertising," Curley
said.

He said AP would issue licenses only to those who agree to the principles of
the "Protect, Point and Pay" programme.

Earlier in his speech, he had pointed out that easy-to-use internet search
engines had resulting in individual publishers exploiting content without the
permission of the news creators.

"Crowd-sourcing web services such as Wikipedia, YouTube and Facebook have
become preferred consumer destinations for breaking news than websites of
traditional news publishers," he said.

Wikipedia now sits on top of the leaderboard of news and information
providers on the Net with a staggering monthly audience of 60 million users.

Curley said content creators had been to slow to react to free exploitation
of news content by third parties without input and permission resulting in a
scenario where the more content was distributed, the more their pricing
declined.
