INDONESIA'S FOOD RESILIENCE AT SAFE LEVEL : MINISTER

Yogyakarta, Oct 12 (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono said Indonesia's food resilience now lay at a safe level.

Speaking on the occasion of World Food Day in Prambanan, Yogyakarta, the minister said the safe level of national food resilience was reflected in the amount of food stocks which were relatively sufficient to meet the people's needs, available at affordable prices and evenly distributable.

"We are convinced that we can maintain this condition through an increase in agricultural production," the minister said adding that the safe food resilience level should be balanced with the preservation of natural resources and the environment as the main supporter of national food resilience.

He acknowledged that certain sections of the people were not yet able to free themselves from poverty and food scarcity, saying that malnutrition cases involving expecting and breast-feeding mothers as well as infants and children below five years old still existed.

He said the government would therefore continue to make efforts to overcome the cases by providing large enough budgets to the regions concerned.

"This is the biggest challenge ahead," he said during the world Food Day function which was also attended by Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, Central Java Governor Bibit Waluyo and FAO representative Mah Noo So.
