JAPANESE FM VISITS SUMATRA QUAKE-AFFECTED AREAS

Padang, Oct 14 (ANTARA) - Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada visited earthquake victims at Kudu village in Padang Pariaman district, West Sumatra, on Wednesday.

Okada arrived at the Minangkabau international airport at Ketaping, Padang Pariaman, at 11.25 a.m. on a Garuda flight and was greeted by West Sumatra Governor Gamawan Fauzi upon arrival.

On the same flight were UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes and Vice German Ambassador Hans-Jorg Brunner.

Okada, accompanied by Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Kojiro Shiojiri left the airport for quake-affected areas in Padang Pariaman by land.

Meanwhile, Holmes made an aerial inspection of quake-hit areas in Padang and Padang Pariaman by a helicopter.

Governor Gumawan Fauzi told reporters after receiving the foreign dignitaries that they expressed their deep concern about the massive quake that devastated the province on September 30, 2009.

The Japanese foreign minister visited the quake-hit area as part of his two-day visit to Indonesia. He met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the latter's office in Jakarta on Tuesday night.

Earlier, the Japanese government had expressed its deepest sympathy and preparedness to help the Indonesian government overcome the widespread impact of the natural disaster.

By Wednesday evening, the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck West Sumatra and neighboring provinces had killed more than 1,117 people and seriously injured 1,214 people and 1,688 others lightly.

The disaster also destroyed 135,299 houses and forced hundreds of people to take refuge. ***3***
