GARUDA XX-G CONTINGENT LEAVING FOR CONGO
Jakarta, Oct 14 (ANTARA) - A 175-member group of Indonesian servicemen officially named Garuda XX-G Contingent will soon leave Jakarta for Congo.
Led by Lt Col CZI Yoga Pranoto, the Garuda XX-G contingent will leave for Congo to join a United Nations peace-keeping mission in the African country for one year.
A ceremony to officially send off the contingent was held in Jakarta on Wednesday, officiated by National Defense Forces (TNI) Chief Gen Djoko Santoso.
"The TNI's involvement in the international mission under the UN's auspices is an honor for the Indonesian nation in general, and for the TNI in particular which has shown its good performance in similar missions over the years," Djoko Santoso said.
He said the Garuda XX-G Contingent was expected to be able to perform its tasks professionally and to preserve the good image of the nation and the Indonesian Military (TNI).
In his massage to the departing troops, Santoso said the involvement of TNI personnel in the UN peace mission in Congo was part of the TNI's non-war military operations (OMSP) in accordance with the mandate of Law No 34/2004 on TNI.
He said the TNI's participation in the UN peace mission was also part of Indonesia's commitment to the preservation of world peace.
Santoso also said that as professional soldiers, the troops were expected to be able to do their jobs as best as possible.
Speaking to the press after sending off a Garuda XX-G contingent to Congo, the TNI chief said no security problems were being anticipated in the run-up to the inauguration of President-elect Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President-elect Boediono on October 20, 2009.
He said security conditions in Jakarta in the run-up to the inauguration of the president and vice president for the 2009-2014 period were relatively conducive.
"Joint security forces from the TNI and Presidential Security Guards (Paspampres) will be deployed to ensure security in the run-up to the inauguration," Santoso said.
President-elect Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President- elect Boediono will be inaugurated on October 20, 2009 at a plenary session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).
