S. Korea, China, Japan push for European-style student exchange program
SEOUL, Oct. 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea, China, and Japan are seeking to create a
student exchange program modeled on Europe's "Erasmus Program," which would allow
their college students to study in each other's country without extra tuition
fees, diplomatic sources here said Friday.
Under the "Campus Asia" program, all credits earned by the participants in other
countries would be recognized at their home schools.
"The leaders of South Korea, China, and Japan agreed to push for the program at
their summit in Beijing on Oct. 10," a foreign ministry source said, requesting
anonymity.
The three countries plan to establish a joint committee early next year to
develop a curriculum and discuss other details, added the source.
If the system is introduced, it is expected to help strengthen the
competitiveness of Asian universities by boosting the mobility of students, the
source said.
The Erasmus Program, named after the Dutch philosopher Desiderius Erasmus, is a
European student exchange program launched in 1987.
