Preparations for local council elections
Astana, October 16, 2009, Khabar - At a meeting in the central headquarters of the Nur Otan People’s Democratic Party, attendees discussed the process of preparation for the council by-elections. The election campaign will take place in 55 electoral districts and by-elections will happen on the 25th of October in 13 regions of the country. In such regions as Aktobe, Almaty and North Kazakhstan, the elections have been postponed until March 2010. Members of the Nur Otan Party believe that the only people who can stand in the council elections are those who are well aware of the problems on the table and are well known for their achievements.
Sergey Gromov, secretary of the Nur Otan People’s Democratic Party:
- We listened to 5 regions and discussed the situation. Currently, we do not have any serious problems. It is important to have a good voting turnout. We perceive this election as extraordinary, and which is necessary for the stable work of our party and the councils. We would like to receive good results in the election. Today, about 93% of the councilors are members of the Nur Otan party.
The work of the Nur Otan party is based on the people’s platform. The party is aimed at fighting corruption, problems of housing construction and support for businessmen, pensioners and families with many children. The candidate for the members of the Astana council took these provisions as the basis for the programme.
Yermek Ospanov, councilor candidate, Astana, electoral district No 25:
- I believe that all the new districts of the city should be developed and supplied with electricity, water and heat. These districts should be equipped with new schools, hospitals and nursery schools. I would like to say that today, unfortunately, many residents of these districts cannot place their children in nursery schools. This situation results in a problem of employment, when young mothers have to stay at home with their children. The party has asked the city authorities to tackle this problem.
The candidate from Almaty is also well aware of the problems in his city and has experience of working in the council.
Talgat Abdizhaparov, councilor candidate for Almaty, electoral district No 6:
- The councilors are working together with the city and the executive authorities. For example, school No 120 hasn’t seen any basic repairs for over 40 years. Such problems should be tackled. We need to allocate money for the repair of school.
Nur Otan has already filed candidates for the elections in all electoral districts. Currently, the number of registered candidates accounts for 142 people. The results of the election will be known on the 25th of October.
