MACA, INTERPOL INK MEMORANDUM ON ANTI-CORRUPTION

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Academy (MACA)
and Interpol Monday signed a memorandum of understanding to establish and
strengthen collaborative efforts on anti-corruption and related training
activities.

The memorandum was signed between Interpol's Police Training and Development
director Dale Sheehan and MACA's director, acting deputy commissioner Samarajoo
Manikam.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) chief commissioner Ahmad Said
Hamdan said the memorandum would increase the capacity and institutional
building between the parties in providing effective and modern anti-corruption
and related studies, research and training.

"This will also create and promote a formal channel of communication between
both parties in order to facilitate a secure and rapid exchange of ideas and
information," he said at the ceremony Monday.

Sheehan and Ahmad Said both agreed that corruption was no longer a local
matter but had become a global issue with the advent of globalisation and
borderless world, with countries doing business with one another.

"It is therefore important that the fight against corruption should be
dynamic, evidence-based, integrated and holistic," Ahmad Said said.

To do that, he said, the MACC must enhance the capacity and capability of
anti-corruption enforcement officers.

"Organisation like Interpol can effectively play their role by working with
MACA in developing effective training programme and also provide a forum where
knowledge can be disseminated and best practices can be shared," he said.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Liew Vui Keong,
representing Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohamed Nazri Abdul
Aziz, witnessed the event.

Liew described the event as a momentous occasion which marked a new chapter
in Malaysia's fight against corruption.

Interpol, the world's largest police organisation with 188 member countries,
was created in 1923 and has vast experience in cross border police cooperation
to prevent or combat crimes.
