INDONESIA'S BIGGEST CHALLENGE AHEAD IS ADDRESSING POVERTY: MINISTER
Jakarta, Oct 20 (ANTARA) - Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said Indonesia will face its biggest challenge in its need to address poverty and promote the people's welfare during the next five-years.
"Of course, the biggest challenge the next cabinet must address will be eradicating poverty," Juwono said after the inauguration of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Boediono as the country's president and vice president for the 2009-2014 period at the parliament building here on Tuesday.
Juwono said the next government must eradicate poverty by increasing economic growth in such an evenly and fair way that it would affect the entire nation and in turn favor the country's defense.
In his inaugural address earlier in the day, President Yudhoyono promised to improve the people's welfare, democracy, and justice in his second five-year term in office.
Yudhoyono said improvement of the people's welfare would top the list of his next government's priorities. "Improvement of the people's welfare will be the first priority to be stepped up through economic development on the basis of superiority in competitive power, natural resources management, and improvement of human resources."
Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) show 32.53 million or 14.15 percent of the country's 230 million population live in poverty as per March 2009.
The figure fell by 2.43 million from March 2008 when the number of the country's impoverished people was 34.98 million.
President Yudhoyono is expected to appoint Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro to replace Juwono in the lineup of his second cabinet to be announced soon.
Purnomo is widely tipped to occupy the post of defense minister after undergoing a fit-and-proper test at President Yudhoyono's residence in Cikeas, Bogor, West Java, earlier this week.***4***
