FIRST BATCH OF PILGRIMS FROM MALAYSIA ARRIVE IN MEDINA

From AHMAD KAMIL TAHIR

MEDINA, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- The first batch of Malaysian Haj pilgrims totalling 450 people arrived safely here at 11.45am local time (4.45pm Malaysian time) Tuesday.

They were greeted upon arrival at the Haj Terminal by Malaysian Ambassador
to Saudi Arabia, Associate Professor Syed Omar Syed Mohamad Al-Saggaf and Tabung
Haji (Pilgrims Fund) chief operations officer Kamaruddin Mat Ali.

Syed Omar also advised the pilgrims to observe personal hygiene and not
force themselves to perform "ibadah sunat" (practices that are better for one to
follow or perform but are not mandatory), to the extent of failing to perform
the mandatory practices.

"Some pilgrims will have the tendency to perform the Umrah (minor Haj)
repeatedly to the extent of falling sick and will not be able to perform the Haj
when the time comes," he said.

The pilgrims were later taken to their hotels after completing the
immigration inspection.
