AUSSIE FM : PEOPLE SMUGGLING DIFFICULT PROBLEM
Padang, West Sumatra , Oct. 21 (ANTARA) - Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said people smuggling was a difficult problem Australia and Indonesia needed to solve together.
Dealing with migration of other nationalities was a tough issue and Australia and Indonesia should cooperate in the matter, Stephen Smith said here on Wednesday.
Smith was in Padang to inspect the location of a drinking water project donated by Australia for victims of the powerful earthquake which devastated West Sumatra last September 30, 2009.
Indonesia and Australia were not only cooperating in relatively easy matters but also in difficult ones, he said.
He said Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at their meeting last Tuesday evening discussed efforts to deal with the people smuggling problem.
People were often smuggled from countries facing conflicts such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, he said.
Meanwhile, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd met at the presidential palace in Jakarta on Tuesday evening.
After the meeting, presidential spokesman Dino Pati Djalal said that Indonesia and Australia need to have a cooperation framework to overcome people smuggling that have been rife in the two countries' waters lately.
"We know this problem will continue to happen..... what is needed is a framework for cooperation between Indonesia and Australia not an ad hoc body set up every time a problem like this occurs," he said after accompanying the president at the meeting with the Australian leader.
He said officials concerned from the two countries would meet in the near future such as from the immigration office, the navy, the police and others to create guidelines for the handling of people smuggling cases.
"The results of the meeting will be reported to the two countries' heads of government on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Singapore in November," he said.
