BANTEN BATIK SALES INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY FOLLOWING UNESCO'S DECLARATION
Serang, W Java, Oct 20 (ANTARA) - The sales of typically Banten batiks had increased 75 percent following UNESCO's recognition of batiks as a world heritage on October 2, 2009.
"People became suddenly interested in buying batiks after the UNESCO's declaration," batik gallery owner Uke Kurniawan said in Serang, Tuesday.
Uke said that Banten batik sales had increased significantly to 75 to 100 pieces a day at a minimum price of Rp100,000 and a maximum of Rp5 million per piece, while previous sales reached less than 30 pieces a day.
The consumers are not only local buyers, but those coming from other countries as well, like the Netherlands and Malaysian.
