EXPERTS TO SHARE EXPERIENCES ON FOREST CONSERVATION, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

IPOH (Malaysia), Oct 21 (Bernama) -- Two international experts on forest
conservation will share their experiences in conservation and sustainable
development programmes at the conference, "Towards an Integrated Masterplan For
Sustainable Management of Belum-Temengor Tropical Rainforest", which starts here
Wednesday.
They are international executive director of conservation for World Wide
Fund for Nature, Dr Guillermo Castilleja, who was instrumental in the design,
development and implementation of successful conservation programmes for over 60
parks in the Amazon Rainforest, and Robert William Carlson, chief administrator
of Costa Rica's "Paseo de Stella Tourism Complex".
The two-day conference will serve as a platform to develop an integrated
masterplan for the country's precious treasure, which is located in northern
state of Perak.
To kick-start the process of developing the masterplan, the Northern
Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA), in partnership with Pulau Banding
Foundation, is hosting the conference at the Impiana Casuarina Hotel.
The Crown Prince of northern state of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, would
officiate the opening of the conference and Perak Menteri Besar, Dr Zambry Abdul
Kadir, is scheduled to deliver his closing remarks.
A total of 150 participants from various government departments,
non-governmental organisations and private enterprises will participate in the
conference, which is endorsed by the federal and Perak governments.
The conference will also feature special presentations by local luminaries
including University Malaya deputy vice-chancellor Prof Dr Khaw Lake Tee
who will share her views on the legal challenges faced in protecting the
Belum-Temengor Tropical Rainforest's status as an environmentally-sensitive
area.
NCIA chief executive, Mohd Annuar Zaini, will be the moderator for the
roundtable discussion on 'Belum-Temengor Tropical Rainforest -- The Precious
Treasure'.
