TEN IRANIAN DRUG SMUGGLERS NABBED AT JAKARTA'S INT'L AIRPORT

Tangerang, Oct 21 (ANTARA) - Ten Iranians who tried to smuggle in crystal and liquid methamphetamine hydrochloride through Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta international airport were arrested by local customs officers last Monday-Tuesday (Oct 19-20).

Head of the customs and excise office at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Bahaduri Wijayanta, said here on Wednesday, the 10 Iranians were arrested for carrying the methamphetamine (locally known as shabu) that was camouflaged in various ways. They arrived from different countries such as Syria, Malaysia and Qatar.

The 10 arrested Iranians consisted of two men whose initials were MRN and JV , and eight females whose initials were KMS, MS, KZS, KR, JMS, ID, FAD, and MBS.

They disembarked from flights of four different airlines. Three of them who had flown in from Kuala Lumpur by Malaysian Airlines on Monday (Oct 19) carried some 9.872 kg of crystal methampetamine valued at Rp21.718 billion.

Another three of them arrived in an Emirates Air flight from Damascus with 28 packs of crystal methamphetamine valued at Rp37.718 billion.

Four of the drug smugglers were married women who carried the crystal methamphetamine hidden in specially designed fast food packages.

Two of the female Iranians arrived in a Qatar Airways plane from Doha carrying 17.500 milliliters of liquid methamphetamine.

The liquid methamphetamine was concealed in large-sized shampoo and liquid soap bottles to deceive customs inspectors.

The last arrest happened on Tuesday evening (Oct 20) and involved one Iranian who had traveled from Doha in a Qatar Airways plane carrying some 5.300 milliliters of clear liquid methamphetamine valued at Rp9.99 billion.

The drug was contained in a bottle labeled as a ceramic cleaning substance.

The customs office at Indonesia's largest airport was currently working with officials of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) to prosecute the members of the foreign drug trafficking network.

The smugglers had violated Law No.5 of 1997 on Group II psychotropic substances making each of them liable to a maximum jail sentence of 10 years and a maximum fine of Rp300 million.
