RESHAPE EDUCATION SYSTEM TO PROSPER, SAYS SIR JOHN

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- Nations needs to reshape their education
system in order to adapt to the ever-evolving global scenario and to chart their
future economic growth, Vodafone Group Plc's Chairman Sir John Bond said.

" Nations that do well in the economy of the future owe it to how well they
address the challenges of reshaping their education system," he said.

While saying that not only is investment in people key to solving the
challenges of sustainable growth, he added that education enabled people to lead
fulfilling lives, he said at the Khazanah Global Lecture entitled "Development
in Changing World," here, Wednesday.

Sir John is well known as the former Chairman of HSBC Group, having spent 45
years in the banking group and rising from the ranks of a management trainee to
Executive Chairman.

Also present at the lecture was Prime Minister Najib Razak, the Crown Prince
of northern state of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah and Bank Negara (Central Bank)
Governor Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz.

" The nature of education needs to change radically to reflect the changed
nature of our global society," he said.

Sir John said although today's education systems were much more progressive
than those of a century ago, the moral was still valid.

" Education needs to enable greater individualism and creativity. We need
young people who can think not young people who can repeat what they have been
told."

On his advice to the younger generation, he said: "Do the job you enjoy and
don't let money be the major influence."

At the same function, Najib launched the second Khazanah Merdeka Book
Series, titled, "Readings on Development: Malaysia 2057", which is a collection
of essays.
