The climate change summit in Copenhagen in December is
expected to deliberate and finalise a successor to the Kyoto
Protocol to tackle global warming.
The global community is currently engaged in intense
discussion on committments on taking emission cuts with the
rich nations egging on developing countries to take legally
binding emission reductions.
"We are committed to further evolving and pursuing our
sustainable growth strategy for reasons of our own vital
national interests. India will adopt purposive domestic
actions to enhance its climate change management," the Prime
Minister said.
Singh said the focus of India's efforts will be targeted
towards achieving time-bound outcomes related to the energy
efficiency of its economy, the share of renewable in its fuel
mix and several other sector specific initiatives.
"Needless to say, a comprehensive, balanced and above
all, an equitable outcome at Copenhagen will enable us to do
much more in all these areas," the Prime Minister said.
He also assured Nasheed that whatever "modest
capabilities" India possesses to tackle this problem will be
at the disposal of countries like the Maldives.
"In our country, we are deeply conscious of the
vulnerability faced by least developed countries and island
states," Singh said. PTI
