MALAYSIA APPOINTED UNESCO DEPUTY CHAIRMAN
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has been appointed deputy
chairman of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation
(UNESCO) at the 17th meeting of the Convention on preservation of the world
cultural and natural heritage in Paris Friday.
National Heritage Department heritage commissioner Prof Emeritus
Zuraina Majid said Malaysia's appointment was unanimously agreed by more than
180 UNESCO member countries.
"Malaysia, which represents several countries in Asia Pacific, is given the
honour because of its active contributions at several UNESCO meetings and sites
which have been recognised as world heritage by the body," she said when
contacted by Bernama here Saturday.
She said Malaysians should be proud with the recognition given to the
country.
She said the convention was important because it discussed measures to
restore and preserve the world heritage.
