15th ASEAN SUMMIT OFFICIALLY CLOSED SUNDAY
Hua Hin, Thailand, Oct 25 (ANTARA) - 15th ASEAN Summit is officially closed here on Sunday at the Royal Dusit Grand Ballroom, Hotel Dusit Thani, in the presence of ten leaders of ASEAN countries.
The closing ceremony is marked by speeches from Thailand's Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, as host of this year's ASEAN Summit and also a speech by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng who would act as next year's ASEAN Summit chairman.
Before closing the meeting, leaders of ASEAN countries signed several documents namely a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on reinforcement of cooperation in standardization and technical regulations of the trading of goods between ASEAN and China.
The signing is conducted by all ministers of trade of ASEAN countries.
The ministers also signed a memorandum of understanding with China for cooperation in intellectual property rights. Another memorandum of understanding generated by ASEAN and China concerned the establishment of an ASEAN-China center to improve the relations between the two sides in various fields. The agreement was inked by the foreign affairs ministers.
The 15th ASEAN Summit in Hua Hin has produced a declaration of heads of state or government level such as a commitment to establish a Human Rights Commission among ASEAN members and agreement to strengthen cooperation in the educational sector.
This year's meeting of ASEAN leaders also resulted in a joint statement containing the organization's views about the climate change. This was issued in relation to the Climate Change Summit which will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December 2009.
ASEAN leaders also announced the latest developments of their effort for an ASEAN Community by 2015.
During his closing speech, PM Abhisit confirmed that all cooperation agreements and commitments reached in the 15th ASEAN Summitt must be implemented soon. He also invited all leaders of ASEAN countries to ensure the sustainability of the cooperation.
Six years before the establishment of the ASEAN community by 2015, Abhisit said, all the ten leaders of ASEAN countries must work hard in creating such a community with the active participation of all the governments, private sector and their people.
