GOVT EXTENDS CONDOLENCES TO FAMILY OF ABUSED MAID

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- The government Tuesday extended its
sympathies and condolences to the family of Mantik Hani, an Indonesian maid who
died Monday after alleged abuse by her employer recently.

Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said in a statement: "The Malaysian government
strongly condemns any form of abuse of workers, regardless of nationality or job
sector."

He also said the government gave the assurance that the police would conduct
an investigation immediately in cases of abuse of workers so that a fitting
penalty was imposed on the offenders.

Mantik, 36, died at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang where she
was admitted last Tuesday.

Hospital director Dr Ghazali Hasni Md Hassan said Mantik did not respond to
treatment administered by specialists.

The male employer of the maid surrendered to the police a day after the maid
was found and has been remanded until Oct 28 while his wife has been remanded
until Tuesday to help in the investigation.
