WEIGHT-LOSS NOODLES TO HIT SHELVES NEXT YEAR

PENANG (Malaysia), Oct 29 (Bernama) -- Researchers from local Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) have innovated a dry yellow noodle that allows consumers to sustain a feeling of fullness for longer and lose weight.

Chief researcher Assoc Prof Azhar Mat Easa said the "neodle" was the first
such product in Malaysia to be tested clinically for its Glycemic Index prior to
commercialisation.

"Neodle releases sugar slower than regular noodles and is more suitable for
those who are sensitive to the sugar content in food and those with a weight
problem.

"The product was specially formulated and prepared to encourage the
formation of cross-linked proteins that can trap starch, and is fortified with
additional starch that blocks digestion," he said at a news conference in USM,
in this northern state of Penang, Wednesday.

Also present were the dean of the School of Industrial Technology Prof
Rozman Din and three other researchers, Saifullah Ramli, Yeoh Shin Yong and Dr
Abbad F.M Alkarkhi.

Azhar said they were able to develop the product with a RM900,000
(US$260,982) grant from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

He said the product's ability to block digestion allowed the noodles to
remain in the digestive system and keep dieters feeling full for longer.

"If the neodles are consumed in the morning, a person will feel full until
night, and consumers can now enjoy yellow noodles without worrying about
excessive increase in their sugar blood levels.

"Neodles have other health benefits in terms of its dietary fibre content
which regulates bowel movement," he said.

The product, which is expected to hit the market in February, does not
affect sensory characteristics after being tested by a sensory panel.

"The taste is similar to that of regular noodles and can be cooked in any
way. USM is in its final stage of discussion with manufacturers and the product
will retail at RM2 (US$0.58) to RM2.50 (US$0.73) per 200g," he said.
