AGONY FOR FOUR DRUG TRAFFICKERS, ECSTASY WORTH US$11.35 MILLION SEIZED
PENANG (Malaysia), Oct 29 (Bernama) -- The ecstasy turned to agony for four globe-trotting Indonesian drug traffickers who used a laboratory hidden inside a luxury bungalow to process millions of ringgit worth of the party drug, Ecstasy.
On Tuesday night, the party was over for the foreigners who were processing
the drug for export to international markets when the police raided the house in
Jalan Feringghi, here.
Seized from the bungalow were 49,282 Ecstasy pills and 322,805 grammes of
the drug worth a total of about RM38.86 million.
Also seized were RM209,000, jewellery worth RM2,000, eight vehicles worth
RM1.2million, two lap-top computers worth RM2,000, an oven, kitchen scale,
packaging machine and various drug-processing paraphernalia. (US$1=RM3.42)
The seizures signalled the crippling of the biggest Ecstasy-processing
syndicate in the northern state of Penang, with suspected links to international
drug syndicates.
The 9.30pm raid was mounted by a team of policemen from the state narcotics
Criminal Investigation Department, assisted by the federal police headquarters
in Bukit Aman.
Penang police chief Ayub Yaakob said initial investigations revealed the
Indonesians had been in and out of the country over the past few years.
He said the arrest of the suspects, aged between 30 and 40, followed seven
months of intelligence gathering on the activities of a major drug-trafficking
syndicate in Penang.
"At the time of their arrest, they were processing Ecstasy at the bungalow.
We also believe they had masterminded the processing and trafficking of the
drug," he said.
Following the raid, Ayub said three local men, aged between 30 and 50, were
nabbed at undisclosed locations in the state.
"The police also seized 2,000 Ecstasy pills from the trio. We believe they
were active drug pushers and are linked to the syndicate," he said.
He said the police did not rule out the possibility that the syndicate was
also linked to an international drug syndicate, adding that investigations were
underway to track down their accomplices in the state.
The seven suspects have been remanded until Nov 3 to facilitate
investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries
the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
Meanwhile, Ayub said that on the same day, the police detained a young
couple and seized an assortment of drugs worth RM30,000 in another raid on a
flat in Ayer Itam.
He said that during the 11pm raid, ketamine weighing 2.3kg, heroin (50.6gm)
and syabu (10gm) worth RM30,000 were seized.
"We also seized a pistol, 44 live bullets and an MK2 bomb from the couple,"
he said, adding that the suspects, in their 20s, could be linked to the
underworld.
Ayub said the duo had been remanded until Nov 3 to assist in investigations
under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 8 of the Firearms
(Increased Penalties) Act 1971.
