1MALAYSIA BRINGS PEOPLE CLOSER TOGETHER, SAYS MINISTER

PORT DICKSON (Malaysia), Nov 2 (Bernama) -- The ideas contained in the
1Malaysia concept are increasingly being supported by the people and have also
brought them closer together, said Information Communication and Culture
Minister Dr Rais Yatim.

"We hope that with the close ties, we will together help realise the
national aspirations.

"Today, while we gather for this Deepavali celebration, let us practise what
is enjoined by our respective religions," he said at the Malaysia Deepavali Open
House 2009 which was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin
Yassin at Siliau Estate, near here, Sunday.

"In the Hindu religion, Deepavali is the celebration of the triumph of good
over evil...likewise, we overcome the ills in society and misdeeds of mankind."

Rais said a plus point for Malaysia was that its multiracial people
respected each other's annual festivals.

"The people just don't talk about unity but demonstrate it by celebrating
together the major festivals like Hari Raya, Deepavali, Christmas, Chinese New
Year, the harvest festivals in Sabah and Sarawak, and other festivals," he
added.

Mohamad, in his speech, called on the people to help realise the
government's aspiration of strengthening racial unity and harmony.

Samy Vellu said the open house not only enabled all races to join in the
Deepavali celebration, but was also a manifestation of the 1Malaysia concept
aimed at forging racial unity and preserving peace and stability in the country.

More than 8,000 people attended the Deepavali open house which also featured
cultural performances and songs by local artistes.
