ASEAN information ministers consider plans on cooperation in information and media

(KPL) ASEAN ministers opened their 10th Conference of Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) yesterday in Vientiane to consider documents approved at the previous senior officials’ meetings held on Tuesday and Wednesday to enhance the cooperation in information and mass media to promote the understanding of ASEAN among member states.
The documents involve the cooperation among ASEAN member states on promoting understanding and cooperation in information area such as information exchange, the exchange of visit of journalists and officials in information sector and the plans and programmes to be raised and considered at the first AMRI+3. These plans and programmes are designed to strengthen the cooperation between ASEAN member states and the cooperation and assistance between ASEAN and its plus three countries.
Lao Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith said that to realise ASEAN community building ASEAN must intensify its efforts to overcome numerous challenges and the information sector must expeditiously implement its programmes and activities.
“I strongly believe that the information sector can continue to play a catalytic role in advocating the principles and policies of ASEAN to people so as to enhance mutual understanding among people and governments, recognising the opportunities and challenges facing ASEAN,” said Dr. Thongloun. Lao Minister of Information and Culture, Mr. Mounkeo Oraboun, said that the cooperation in information and media among ASEAN member states and between ASEAN and its plus three countries had been put into practice successfully through a number of projects and these include mechanisms for exchange of visits of officials in information and mass media area, conferences, seminars, meetings at various levels.
“The outcome of relations, exchange and cooperation in information and media over the past period made a significant contribution to promoting understanding, solidarity, friendship among ASEAN member states and between ASEAN and its dialogue partners,” added Mr. Mounkeo.
The documents related to the cooperation between ASEAN and its dialogue partners will also be considered at the meeting before finalised at the first ASEAN+3 Ministers Responsible for Information, which will take place today, to contribute to the establishment of the ASEAN Community.
