CALL FOR WORLD'S AIR FORCES TO COOPERATE MORE IN AEROSPACE EDUCATION, RESEARCH

BEIJING, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- Royal Malaysian Air Force chief General Rodzali
Daud Friday suggested that the air forces of the world have more cooperation in
aerospace education and research.

"Aerospace technology is a niche area where knowledge can be shared and
passed down to the younger generation, like how air power can be used as a
catalyst for stability and prosperity."

Rodzali was speaking at the "Air Force Peace and Development" forum
organised by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force in conjunction with
its 60th anniversary, where the air force chiefs from 34 countries were invited.

He suggested the setting up of an aerospace centre of excellence where air
force personnel from all over the world could gather and share their thoughts,
especially in coming up with new, innovative ideas on how air power could create
peace and harmony.

In order to enhance strategic partnership at the grassroot level, he
proposed the formation of a world air force association to bring together airmen
and airwomen and provide them and their families with a number of privileges and
benefits.

"Strategic communication must be exercised vigorously between the higher air
force commanders so as to develop greater understanding and trust, just like
what we have achieved on security issues of the Straits of Malacca among the
littoral states," said Rodzali.

He said traditional military diplomacy must still be continued and enhanced,
such as by having joint and combined exercises, peacekeeping operations, arms
sales for technological advancement and research in non-military applications.

"The air forces of the world should strive for a common goal and interest
which capitalises on similarities rather than differences, while strong
collaboration and cooperation must be demonstrated in all areas, particularly
defence, security, trade and investment.

Earlier, while delivering his keynote address, PLA Air Force commander Gen
Xu Qiliang called for peaceful and harmonious use of space and air by the
world's air forces.

"No single country can stay out of the way, or protect itself if space and
air are turned into battlefields," said Xu.

He proposed that a just, effective safety mechanism for space and air be
put in place to prevent conflicts and wars, so that space and air could better
serve civilisation.

"The air forces should reach consensus on issues concerning safety in space
and territorial airspace, and to improve international laws and regulations,"
Xu said.
