Health Activist Dr C R Soman passes away

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 7 : Public health expert and
social activist Dr C R Soman died of heart attack here.

Dr Soman(74) who breathed his last on Friday was an
astute campaigner for a strong public health system and a
critic of excessive privatisation of the healthcare sector.
A nutritionist at the Medical College Hospital here for
long, Dr Soman was a prolific commentator on media and health
related issues.

Sisters get electrocuted, one dies
Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 7 : A woman died and her sister
was hospitalied after they came to contact with a live
electric wire at Panachamoodu near here.
Rosy (50) fell dead on the spot and her sister Sarojini
(52) was hospitalised. Rosy, a vegetable vendor, was going to
the market with her sister on Friday when they came in contact
with a wire lying on the road.

Compensation of Rs 5 lakh for victims of Areekode boat tragedy
Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 7: The State Cabinet announced a
compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of those
children who died when a boat capsized at Areekode in
Malappuram district recently.
Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said yesterday that the
Government had also approved for the construction of a hanging
bridge across river Chaliyar where the tragedy occured. (more)
