Alcohol sales restricted for under age people

Bishkek, November 10, 2009 (Khabar) - From now on, all Kyrgyz shops have to ask people to show their IDs to confirm their eligibility to buy alcoholic drinks following a new law imposed in Kyrgyzstan. A similar law had been in existence in the country for a long time but it did not say whether shop assistants should ask customers for an ID or not. Now, they must ask it.

Zhumagul Iskenova:
- A lot of young people start drinking and smoking when they are children. I think it is a necessary law.

Meanwhile, lawyers say only law enforcement bodies are allowed to ask people for their ID. In turn, parents say the restriction can only be for the benefit of their children as the government should take part in bringing up a healthy generation.

Nikolai Dementyev:
- There are some shop assistants who sell it without asking for anything, in the rural areas they all know one another. However, if the law is passed it will have to be followed by all residents including those in villages.

Nevertheless, the new rules will only work if the parents report a sale of alcohol to a child. In this case, the municipal inspection will have legal grounds for an examination.
