APEC MINISTERS HAVE MANY STRATEGIC ISSUES AT HAND
By Zakaria Abdul Wahab
SINGAPORE, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- The 20th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
(Apec) meeting, which entered its third day today, began in earnest with
officials from the 21 economies drafting final reports for the ministerial
meetings in the coming two days.
The Apec Ministerial Meeting (AMM) will begin tomorrow and the 16th Apec
Finance Ministers' Meeting (FMM) on Thursday.
In the AMM, Malaysia will be represented by International Trade and Industry
Minister Mustapa Mohamed and Deputy Foreign Minister Kohilan Pillay Appu, and in
the FMM by Second Finance Minister Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah.
High on the agendas of the AMM are strategic issues on how to manage the
post-economic crisis and prepare for recovery, to integrate the economy of the
region and to foster inclusive and sustainable growth and human security.
Also a matter of great concern of the Apec economies is the commitment of
each and everyone in refraining from all forms of protectionism and to keep
their markets open as protectionist measures are bound to create a chain
reaction and further prolong the recovery process.
The International Trade and Industry Ministry said in Kuala Lumpur Monday
that Malaysia's priority would be on keeping markets as this would help to
facilitate global trade to grow and enhance investment flows in the region.
Malaysia would emphasise the need to achieve an early and successful
conclusion of the Doha Round negotiations as this could provide the momentum for
global economic growth, the ministry said.
Malaysia will also share its success in carrying out several
non-conventional measures to lessen the effects of the global economic downturn
during the FMM.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Apec, a symposium organised by the
Institute of Southeast Asian Studies with the collaboration of Singapore's
Foreign Affairs Ministry was held as a side event today.
The theme of the symposium was "20 Years in History: Breaking down Barriers,
Connecting the Region and the World".
The panelists for the symposium included a number of current Apec ministers
and officials, as well as former Apec personalities who were involved in the
establishment of the grouping.
They reflected on the strategic circumstances surrounding the founding of
Apec, its achievements and its roles in the evolving global landscape.
