M'SIA HOPES CHINA'S PRESIDENT VISIT WILL BOOST INVESTMENTS FROM CHINA
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- The government hopes China's President Hu
Jintao's visit to Malaysia will further promote investments to the country from
China.
Commenting on the president's visit to Kuala Lumpur, Minister of
International Trade and Industry, Mustapa Mohamed said China was interested in
resource based investments but Malaysia also hoped that China will consider
investing in other projects.
President Hu arrived in Kuala Lumpur Tuesday for a two-day official visit to
Malaysia.
This will be Hu's second visit to Malaysia having visited the country as
Chinese vice-president in May 2002.
"We will be monitoring closely the MoUs signed between Chinese and Malaysian
companies," Mustapa said during a press conference after officiating the 3rd
International Trade Malaysia Exhibition (Intrade Malaysia 2009) organised by the
Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) Tuesday.
He was asked on the potential investments expected from China following the
president's visit to the country.
Mustapa said of the 16 Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) signed between
Malaysian and Chinese companies during the earlier visit by Prime Minister
Najib Razak to China this year, one MoU had taken off, while another was waiting
for feedback and the rest in various stages of implementation.
One of the major investments, valued at about RM4 billion and in the pulp
and paper project in Sarawak, has not taken off yet, he said.
This is due to some financing issues, he added.
