Nintendo welcomes Supreme Court ruling against piracy
SEOUL, Nov. 19 (Yonhap) -- The Korean unit of Japan's game console maker Nintendo
Co. welcomed Thursday a Supreme Court ruling against the sale of tools used to
play pirated games.
The Supreme Court last week confirmed an eight-month jail term for a retail
dealer, identified only by his surname Kim, for importing and selling R4 and DSTT
computer chips that allow users to play pirated games, Nintendo Korea said in a
statement.
"We will continue to take stern actions against illegality and institute legal
proceedings," said Mineo Koda, head of Nintendo Korea. "Our efforts will
contribute to protection of the game developers's rights as well as to the
reinforcement of the South Korean game industry."
It was the first ruling by South Korea's Supreme Court involving the sale and
distribution of computer chips, the company said, adding that some 50 similar
cases have been tried in lower courts around the country.
