XINHUA, BERNAMA TO INCREASE NEWS EXCHANGE & COOPERATION

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Xinhua News Agency of China and Bernama,
the Malaysian National News Agency, will further strengthen their news exchange
and cooperation to allow for more news to be distributed between them, Xinhua
Editor-in-Chief He Ping said here Thursday.

He said Xinhua's bureau in Kuala Lumpur had only two correspondents and that
an improved cooperation in news exchange would enable more reports from Malaysia
to be distributed to media organisations in China.

"We can work together to exchange more news, complement each other to have
more reports from Malaysia so that people in China would have more information
about this country," he told reporters after his maiden visit to Bernama
headquarters here.

He Ping, who is leading a six-member delegation from Xinhua for a visit to
Southeast Asian countries, was briefed by Bernama General Manager Hasnul Hassan
and Editor-in-Chief Yong Soo Heong.

He said the two news organisation had been cooperating with each other in
the last 20 years.

Other members of his delegation include Xinhua Director-General Zhu Guixian,
two Deputy Directors Cao Guoqiang and Guan Xinguo, Secretary Zhai Wei and
Director Zhao Hongzhang.

He Ping said that in view of the increased economic relations and
people-to-people contact between China and Malaysia over the last 35 years,
there was a greater demand for news and information.

This was where Xinhua and Bernama would play a useful role in the
dissemination of news and information, he said.

At present, Bernama and Xinhua have a news exchange agreement under the
auspices of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA).

"We are looking forward to have more exchanges of news, multimedia content
and even journalists. Bernama started its radio and TV news operations much
earlier (than Xinhua). Xinhua has just started out to have news content in the
audio-visual format. So we hope we can tap into Bernama's experience in this
field," he said.

Yong said the visit by He Ping was a major milestone to further strengthen
relations between the two news agencies "as there is a lot that we can learn
from each other."

Xinhua was established in 1930 and has remained China's sole news agency.
Xinhua employs about 10,000 people including 120 journalists abroad.

Xinhua's head-offices in Beijing and Hong Kong receive more than 1,000 news
reports and 350 photographs from around the world per day.

Bernama, which was established in 1968, is currently serving most of the
print and electronic media in Malaysia. It has bureaus in all over the country,
and several overseas bureaus, including one in Beijing.

Besides offering news services to newspapers, TV stations, radio stations
and Internet news portals, Bernama has been providing news via mobile phones to
enable subscribers to receive news anywhere, anytime.
