FLOODS CUT OFF BANJARSARI SUB DISTRICT, KILL 2 VILLAGERS

Lebak, Baten, Indonesia, Nov. 26 (ANTARA) - Floods have cut off villages in Banjarsari sub district, Lebak District, with the waters reaching a height of up to 1.5 meters over the past two days.

Two villagers were killed as they were swept away by the flow of Cisimeut river.

"Evacuation process of flood victims continues as rainfall is still relatively high," Pardi, head of Banjarsari sub district, said here on Thursday.

However, rescuers were found difficulty in reaching 11 villages submerged by floodwaters. Thousands of villagers were still being trapped in the floods.

The floods swept away a bridge which connected several villages.

Some 1,081 houses and 260 hectares of rice fields were flooded in Banjarsari sub district. Flood victims evacuated themselves to relatives' houses, schools or mosques located in higher ground.

In Lebak District, around 3,500 houses and 750 hectares of rice fields were flooded, according to Kaprawi, head of the Lebak disaster mitigation coordination.

The two-day floods have affected Banjarsari, Wanasalam, Leuwidamar, Cimarga, Kalanganyar, Cibadak, Rangkasbitung, and Cileles.

Meanwhile, floods triggered by incessant downpours over the past three days, have inundated six sub districts in Pandeglang District, Banten Province.

The six affected sub districts were Pagelaran, Panimbang, Patia, Sindang Resmi, Munjul and Sobang, Entis Sutisna, a local prominent fiture of Sindang Resmi sub district, said here on Thursday.

"Earlier, the floods only affected Pagelaran, Panimbang, and Patia sub district, but now it has expanded to six sub district," Entis Sutisna said.

Rains which continued to fall until Thursday morning, have caused Cilemer and Ciliman rivers to overflow.

Around 1,600 houses and 1,850 hectares of rice fields were flooded, he said.

At Langkap Caang village, Sindang Resmi sub district, the floodwaters reached a hight of up to three meters, said Achyani, a local resident.
Kubangkampil village, Sukaresmi sub district, was the worst affected by the flood as 450 houses were inundated, he said. ***
