THOUSANDS OF HOUSES INUNDATED IN PANDEGLANG

Pandeglang, Banten, Indonesia, Nov. 26 (ANTARA) - Thousands of houses have been inundated in Pandeglang District, Banten Province, since the past three days as Cilaman and Cilemer villages overflew.

"Up to now, villagers are taking refuge in safer areas," Agus, a member of disaster rescue team, said here on Thursday.

The rescue team was currently concentrating on helping thousands of residents of Patia sub district which was inundated with the water reaching a height of up to three meters, he said.

Around 1,600 houses and 1,850 hectares of rice fields were flooded in Patia sub district, but there was no report of casualty in the disaster.

The floods cut off road transportation connecting several villages, and Patia sub district was paralyzed because Cilemer and Ciliman rivers overflew, he said.

"Until now, heavy rain still falls in Patia," he said.

The floods have also affected Angsana, Sukaresmi, Panimbang, and Pagelaran sub districts.

Patia Sub district head Maman said thousands of people have been taking refuge in their relatives' houses, schools, village offices or mosques due to the floods.

Soleh (45), a Patia resident, said flood victims desperately needed food as the existing food was not enough for everyone.

Floods triggered by incessant downpours over the past three days, have inundated six sub districts in Pandeglang District, Banten Province.

The six affected sub districts were Pagelaran, Panimbang, Patia, Sindang Resmi, Munjul and Sobang, Entis Sutisna, a local prominent figure of Sindang Resmi sub district, said here on Thursday.
