Government keeps an eye on food prices
Astana, November 27, 2009 (Khabar) - Instructions given by Nursultan Nazarbayev during his live question-and-answer session with the people of Kazakhstan are now in the focus of the government. The most topical issues including the reduction of food prices and a shortage of places in nursery schools topped a government meeting and resulted in inspections in Astana’s markets and nursery schools.
Arman Yevniyev, Deputy Minister for Agriculture of RK:
- We have made poultry meat prices reduce from between 350 and 400 to between 245 and 280 tenge per kilogramme. The cost of apples has reduced from 160 to 135 tenge. We will carry on this project in other trade facilities such as the Eurasia and Alem markets. The city administration has also signed 12 memoranda with companies promising to reduce their prices by 20%.
The government also signed memoranda with 6 large trade networks such as Astykzhan, Aprel and Ramstor. They also promised to reduce the price of imported goods. Another topical issue which is now in the focus of the Prime Minister and regional governors is the lack of nursery schools. As of today, there are 240 thousand children on the waiting list with a similar situation in the Almaty and South Kazakhstan regions as well as the cities of Almaty and Astana which are all reported as being acute. Before the end of this year, 24.5 thousand children will be attending nursery school with another 74 thousand 300 children to be distributed among the nursery schools which have been promised by the government.
Karim Massimov, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan:
- A lot of work has been done within the two weeks since the live question and answer session with the head of state where he set a number of tangible tasks. I would like to thank the ministers in charge and regional governors for the work done. Such work should not be just a one-off campaign after which we can all forget about it. We have reported on the results. From now on, we will have to keep an eye on these solutions which we’ve found.
The head of the Cabinet alongside the Minister for Education and the Astana mayor personally inspected the current state of food prices and what the capital city administration is doing to solve the issues of nursery school shortages. The Premier paid a visit to one of the largest markets in the city and a trade centre. The prices were fine. The Prime Minister also inspected the buildings of former nursery schools which are now occupied by state bodies. Soon, they will be used for their intended purpose as well new mini-centres which are constructed in new residential complexes.
