SEOUL, Dec. 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak will attend a key
U.N. climate change conference this month in Copenhagen, where world leaders will
try to strike a deal on a new international framework to combat global warming,
the presidential office said Sunday.
Lee will make a three-day visit to Copenhagen from Nov. 17, Cheong Wa Dae said in
a statement. "The visit to the summit will be a meaningful contribution to global
efforts to tackle climate change, as South Korea is a host country of the G-20
summit next year."
The Copenhagen conference will start on Monday and winds up on Dec. 18, aiming at
coming up with a treaty to replace the U.N. Kyoto Protocol on climate change,
which expires in 2012.
Host Denmark has invited 191 world leaders to the conference's top-level session
on Dec. 17-18, which will also be attended by other world leaders including U.S.
President Barack Obama.
The leaders will be working on disputes over to what extent mandatory emissions
cuts should be imposed on poor or rich countries.
Lee will give an address at the summit, explaining South Korea's low-carbon and
green growth project and Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA)
Registry plan for developing countries, the office said.
The Registry is designed to invite developing countries to voluntarily
participate in mitigation actions and to provide the international support they
need.
South Korea, not obliged to cut emissions under the Kyoto Protocol, unveiled its
plan last month to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent from its forecast,
or "business-as-usual" (BAU), level in 2020. This would be equivalent to reducing
the country's emissions by 4 percent from its 2005 level.
Lee will attend a dinner hosted by Danish Queen Margrethe II on Dec. 17, added
the presidential office. On the following day, he will participate in a joint
press conference and a luncheon hosted by Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke.
