Foreign envoys brought together ahead of 60th Korean War anniversary
SEOUL, Dec. 7 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's national veterans association said it
brought together dozens of representatives from foreign embassies on Monday to
brief them on its plans to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean War
next year.
Diplomats from 21 nations, including Britain, that fought for South Korea under
the U.N. banner in the three-year war were joined by officials from the U.S.
military command here, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs said in a
release.
The ministry says it is planning dozens of events to mark the start of the
1950-53 Korean War that technically continues to this day because it ended in a
truce rather than a peace treaty.
The plans include an invitation to national honor guards and military bands of
the countries that sent troops and the establishment of a new monument to honor
soldiers who died.
About 28,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea as a deterrent against
North Korea.
