MEDVEDEV, MERKEL TO DISCUSS RUSSIA-EU INTERACTION

MOSCOW, June 5 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will discuss Russian-European Union interaction at the future G8 summit and strategic stability at his talks in Berlin, the president's aide Sergei Prikhodko said.

The matters of Russia's cooperation with the European Union has become especially important after the the Council of Europe approved the mandate of the European Commission for talks with Russia on a new agreement on strategic partnership.

This document gives a start to talks that were delayed over a year and a half.

Germany as one of key members of the European Union is an important partner of Russia in talks on this new agreement, which is especially important in the run up to the be Russia-EU summit in Khanty-Mansiisk at the end of the month.

Of paramount importance is Germany's opinion about the preparation of the G8 summit that wil be held on Hokkaido.

Germany presides the "club" before Japan.

Prikhodko said Moscow perceives with "great satisfaction " the fact that Berlin had used groundwork of Russia that was the president of G8 in a previous year.

"It is in our common interests that the summit was doomed for success, and key topics of the July summit will be touched upon," Prikhodko said.

Another international issue to be discussed in the German capital will be Afghanistan.

"This is determined by the fact that FRG has a military contingent in this country, and this topic is important fore them," Prikhodko said.

"The leaders will probably touch upon the Kosovo problem," he said.

The Kremlin positively appraises interaction of Ruissia and Germany in the international arena.

"With all nuances in the approaches of Russia and Germany to specific matters of tge international agenda, the sphere of coincident interests of both countries is broader than their differences," Prikhodko said.

"A feature to Russian-German interaction is the aim of looking for points of contact, the ability for compromises and overcoming arising problems. With the increasing negative tendencies in internationalaffairs, the frank dialogue of Russia with Germany is claimed, and it will be continued in a wide range of topics," he said.
