FRANCE, EU GRANT 2 MLN EURO FOR HEALTH COMMUNITY

Vientiane, June 5 (KPL) - The French Red Cross and the European Union have agreed to further provide financial support to Vientiane and Sayaboury provinces for the improvement of health community, safe water and facility system.

A 40-month project worth 2 million Euro, is to help improvement of health community in rural and remote areas, safe water system, latrines, health care and environment protection.

The project will focus on the construction of safe water supply system, family latrines, hygienic and community-based health care promotion. This also includes first aids, infectious diseases and child health care.

The project started operation last month in 60 villages in four districts of Vientiane province, and three districts of Sayaboury province.

A memorandum of understanding on Health Community Improvement Project for Vientiane and Sayaboury provinces was signed here on 3 June.

The signatories to the MOU were Dr Kideng Thammalangsy, Secretary General of the Lao Red Cross Society, and Mr. David Boison, country representative of the French Red Cross in Laos, in presence of officials of parties concerned.

"More than 16,000 people in 60 target villages are expected to benefit from the project," said Mr. Boison. "These are multi-culture villages have selected as target villages of the project which based on the standard of poor environment and remote areas.

Mr. Bouaketh Phansy, Head of Vientiane Red Cross Office highlighted the implementation of health education and hygienic improvement project conducted in Vientiane and Sayabouly provinces considered satisfactory success in the supply of clean water and latrines construction for target villages and training on hygiene for local staff of Lao Red Cross, so far.

This project run from 2003 to 2006 amounted to over 1 million euro of grant carried out in 114 villages of Vientiane province and 64 villages of Sayabouly province.
