Internet TV subscribers top 1.5 mln in S. Korea after one year

SEOUL, Dec. 10 (Yonhap) -- The number of South Korean subscribers to real-time
Internet-protocol television (IPTV) has topped the 1.5 million mark a year after
the service started, a telecom regulator said Thursday.
According to the Korea Communications Commission, the country's three IPTV
service providers -- KT Corp., SK Broadband Co. and LG Dacom Corp. -- have
achieved the landmark a year after the IPTV officially launched in December last
year.
IPTV delivers television and movie content real-time through broadband Internet
networks instead of using radio frequency or satellite signals as traditional TV
does, and also offers video-on-demand (VOD) services.
IPTV services are spreading faster than other new media services. Cable
television channels took more than four years to recruit 1 million subscribers
while satellite television service took one year and nine months.
