RIGHTS BODY: HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS ON THE INCREASE
Jakarta, Dec 10 (ANTARA) - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) said it handled about 4,600 cases of human rights violations this year, compared to 4,500 last year.
Addressing a function to mark the 2009 World Human Rights Day here on Thursday, Komnas HAM Chief Ifdhal Kasim asked the government to pay more serious attention to the increasing number of human rights violations throughout the country.
He noted that the government had yet to make a significant breakthrough and therefore, efforts to prevent human rights violations had not become the main focus of state policy.
To observe the World Human Rights Day which falls on December 10, the rights body organized a number of activities, including art parade, blood donor, music show and book exhibition.
It also organized a free forum themed "Reveal and Get Them Back".
Also present at the function were Catholic priest and human rights activist Benny Susetyo and legislator Eva Kusuma Sundari of the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP).
Deputy Chairman of the Setara Institute Bonar Tigor Naipospos said in mid-October 2009 that the promotion of human rights in the country was still merely normative.
Bonar said only 56 of 105 programs put in the 2004-2009 National Action Plan for Human Rights could be realized.***1***
