100th anniversary of Pavel Vasilyev

Pavlodar, December 13 2009, Khabar - Pavlodar has celebrated the 100th anniversary of the talented poet and author of the famous Salt Riot, Pavel Vasilyev, who was killed in Stalin’s prisons. Despite being only 27 years old on the day of his execution, he left a rich cultural heritage during his short life. He wrote 12 poems and thousands of verses. “Pavlodar is my hawk-like city” has become the poetic symbol of the city on the Irtysh River.

Svetlana Gronskaya, researcher:
- Boundless steppes, different nations, rich languages and folklore gave a great boost to his creative work and it can be seen in his poems. In all of his works, he connected his destiny with Kazakhstan.

At the beginning of the 1930s, the father of Svetlana Gronskaya headed the Izvestiya newspaper and was one of the few people, who wasn’t afraid of publishing his works despite the censorship of the time. He assisted in publishing Pavel Vasilyev poems at the “Noviy mir” magazine. The readers were shocked when they read the Salt Riot poem, where he told about the revolt of the Kazakh people against social injustice.

Svetlana Gronskaya, researcher:
- His heart was always open to compassion. In the Salt Riot he defended the people, among whom he was living.

He was first arrested on May 4th, 1932. His second arrest happened three years later. He was accused of attempting to murder Stalin but neither investigators nor the sergeants believed it. One of them saved the last poem of the poet called “Red bullfinches flying”. Pavel is considered to be a Eurasian poet, since nobody was able to unite Russian and European culture like him. Pavlodar has a house-museum of the poet. The publication of the collection of his works was devoted to his anniversary.
