Presentation of Mamluk novel
Almaty, December 13 2009, Khabar - The presentation of the Mamluk novel by Yermek Tursunov has happened in Almaty. The “Mamluk” book is the result of many years of research into the history of the countries of the Middle East and the period of the Early Middle Ages. The period of the Early Middle Ages was a critical one for Islam and the Arab world. It was the time of the reign of Beibars, a nomad by birth who was called Rukn al-Din by his fellow countrymen. Work on this book took 6 years. During this time, the author wrote 18 variants of the book.

- As I collected the material, the plot changed. At first I was to write a screenplay, which gradually turned into what it is now. People say that it is a novel, so I agree then. But it is not a screenplay any more.
Yermek Tursunov said that in order to write a good book, he needs to see everything with his own eyes and feel the spirit of the East. He was very interested in this theme.
The pioneer in this subject was Moris Simashko and the “Sultan Beibars” film was based on the “Yemshan” story. But the film told about his mature years and the book by Yermek Tursunov presents the development of the famous ruler, who was dreaming of returning home. He always remembered his homeland. Everyone in the Mamluk army spoke Turkish. While Yermek was collecting his material, he visited Syria, Jordan and Egypt where Beibars ruled.

- This novel is about events which happened in the 13th century. But at the same time it contains Chinese and Indian philosophy and Songs of the Old Testament. It presents the story of Ancient Egypt.
Yermek Tursunov can be referred to as a writer, screenplay writer and director, since he wrote the screenplays to such films as “Abulkhair-khan”, “Mustafa Shokai”, “Late love”, “Kurak korpe”, “Mother’s paradise” and “Kelin”, which he directed himself. The “Mamluk” novel was planned as a screenplay and will de directed by Sergey Bodrov, who came to the presentation of the book from Los Angeles.
