Kazakhstan’s pilots test freshly modernised Mil Mi-24 helicopter gunship
Almaty, December 13 2009, Khabar - The outside temperature is minus 28 but it cannot stop these pilots. The Alakol Lake and its surroundings are known for their hard climate and rough winters. Military service in this area is always referred to as being difficult. The Ucharal air base is the only helicopter base in Kazakhstan. Today, the military fleet is ready for any mission as its Mi-24 helicopters have recently been repaired and modernised.
Ruslan Kunurov, Ucharal Air base commander:
- This machinery is very good and reliable. Having been modernized, the helicopters are now eligible for night flights with night vision glasses. Now, we have an opportunity to fly at night as low as 50 metres from the ground and land almost anywhere.
The Ucharal air base is more than a military unit. Its compound also features a training centre for young pilots. The majority of them are cadets of the Aktobe Air Defence Academy. Piloting military helicopters is a difficult occupation which is why training flights are held 4 times a week in two shifts. Up to 10 helicopters take part in the training simultaneously. They complete different missions with a joint group flight considered to be the most difficult one.
Dauren Karakatov, helicopter division commander:
- In compliance with the missions, we practice different kinds of flights including hovering and round- target flights too. We also fly along the route along with our senior officers and fulfill different tasks.
In the near future, the preservation of high battle readiness of Kazakhstan’s army is going to be number one priority for the military chiefs in Kazakhstan’s army. Military helicopters play an important role in the support of joint operations of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation.
