VP CALLS FOR "CLEAR THINKING" ABOUT BANK CENTURY CASE

Jakarta, Dec 12 (ANTARA) - Vice President Boediono called on all parties here on Saturday to "think and act with a clear mind" in regard to the latest political and legal developments in the Bank Century case.

"I am only making an appeal. Let us clear the air, and not make matters worse. Let us engage in politics not for the sake of politics but for the welfare and interests of the people," he said at a meeting with the media here on Saturday.

His statement came following the playing of a recording of an alleged conversation between Finance Minister Sri Mulyani and Bank Century owner Robert Tantular during a Committee for Financial System Stability (KSSK) meeting on November 20-21, 2008 by a House Bank Century Inquiry Committee member, Bambang Soesatyo from Golkar Party.

Boediono said the government really wished the case could be settled well, correctly and quickly. He said the government supported the current legal and political processes.

"The government does not want prejudices against the government with regard to the handling of the case. Therefore its process must be transparent and clear," he said.

Boediono, who was the central bank governor at the time the Bank Century almost collapsed , said that at the KSSK meeting no conversation had taken place between Finance Minister Sri Mulyani and Robert Tantular.

"He (Robert Tantular) did come there but did not participate in the meeting. He came to the same building where the meeting took place but he was on a different floor, for questioning on his accountability because Bank Century was in trouble. So, procedurally it was not a problem," he said.

Boediono said what happened was a conversation between Sri Mulyani and the head of the President's Working Unit for Reform Program and Management (UKP3R), Marsilam Simanjuntak, in which the name Robert Tantular was mentioned.

"The impression as if Sri Mulyani and Robert Tantular had conducted a conversation is not true. What is true is a conversation between Sri Mulyani and Marsilam Simanjuntak," he said.

On the occasion Boediono said what he did while he was governor of the central bank at the time to deal with the Century Bank case was correct.

"The situation at the time was really serious and a quick and correct decision was needed to overcome it. I personally think what I did was right," he said.

Boediono said "I dare bet everything I have including my position and my life to God. I dare bet in the name of the world and heaven."
"So, let us think clearly. Do not let what we have done to make what we wish to achieve namely the quick and thorough settlement of the case unrealized," he said.***
