MALAYSIAN PM ARRIVES IN COPENHAGEN FOR WORLD LEADERS' TALKS ON CLIMATE CHANGE

From Mokhtar Hussain

COPENHAGEN, Dec 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Najib
Tun Razak arrived in this Danish capital Wednesday morning to join some 100
world leaders at a United Nations conference in seeking urgent action to address
the issue of climate change.

Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, were received on arrival by
Malaysian Natural Resources and Environment Minister Douglas Uggah
Embas, Malaysian Ambassador to Sweden Kamarudin Mustafa and senior
Malaysian officials.

The UN Climate Change Conference, from Dec 7 to Friday, is seeking strong
political commitment from the heads of state and government, including United
States President Barack Obama, to sign a meaningful deal in addressing the
issue.

Two main issues to be discussed are the reduction of greenhouse emissions
and providing financial aid to developing nations to shift to greener growth and
adapt to a warmer world.

Najib is scheduled to deliver a speech Thursday to present Malaysia’s
commitments toward helping to help reduce the effects of global warming which is
threatening mankind.

The prime minister had said that Malaysia would offer “credible” cuts in its
emissions of carbon dioxide to halt global warming.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Najib’s
presence at the summit clearly demonstrated the importance Malaysia attached to
the issue of climate change.

Najib had also made the global climate a priority in his national budget for
2010, pledging a RM1.5 billion (US$437.9 million) fund to promote green
technology besides several incentives to encourage the construction of green
buildings.

Malaysia has seen a temperature rise of between 0.5 degrees and 1.5 degrees
Celsius while its coastal line has been narrowed due to sea-level rise.

A UN report said that Malaysia’s carbon emissions in 2006 stood at 187
million tonnes or 7.2 tonnes from each Malaysian, compared to Indonesia, the
world’s third largest emitter with 2.3 billion tonnes.

Najib and Rosmah will attend a dinner with Malaysians at a hotel here
Wednesday night and a dinner to be hosted by the Queen of Denmark on Thursday.
