Tyagachev re-elected Russian Olympic chief.
MOSCOW, December 18 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian Olympic Committee chief
Leonid Tyagachev was re-elected for a new four-year term of office on
Thursday after securing a landslide victory at the Olympic assembly with
215 votes in favor and 15 against.
Tyagachev, who was the sole candidate, said preparations for the
Sochi-2014 Winter Games would be his main task.
The vote gave Tyagachev a new first deputy after Olympic participation
promotion chief Igor Kazikov, 58, beat Viktor Khotochkin with 120 votes
against 103.
Former world number one tennis player Marat Safin failed his first
attempt to get an official Olympic job after he quit playing.
Safin was among eleven candidates for the post of a vice-president of
the Russian Olympic Committee, but withdrew before the vote in the Olympic
assembly.
Safin said at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow this year he was eyeing
politics or some official sport post after he quits tennis. He admitted,
however, he would need a strong back-up for that.
The secret ballot vote re-elected incumbent Vice-Presidents Vladimir
Vasin and Vladimir Loginov and gave the third post to Deputy Sport
Minister Gennady Aleshin.
