Ahmadinejad proposes naming 2011 the year of environmentalism

COPENHAGEN, Dec. 19 (MNA) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has proposed that the United Nations name 2011 The Year of Revising Consumption Patterns and Reducing Pollution.

Ahmadinejad made the proposal in his address to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen on Thursday.

The Iranian president also criticized the policies of the major powers and pointed out that Afghanistan and Iraq could have become much more developed than they are today if the invaders had spent just a portion of the cost of the war building up these countries.

“It is said that over $250 billion was spent to attack Afghanistan and about $1 trillion in the Iraq war. Couldn’t Afghanistan be turned into a developed country by spending $50 billion on Afghanistan’s infrastructure and economic development?” he asked.

Ahmadinejad also stated that greenhouse gas emissions are a thousand times more dangerous than terrorists, adding that these emissions could be greatly decreased by spending only a portion of the military budgets of the major powers.

The UN Climate Change Conference opened on December 7 and closed on December 18.

Delegates from 192 countries gathered in the Danish capital for the long-awaited UN summit.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and presidential aide Esfandiar Rahim-Mashaii accompanied Ahmadinejad.

Nuclear row is just a political pretext

Ahmadinejad stated that the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program is only a “political pretext” and is an indication of the Westerners’ double standards.

“If the United States is concerned that we may deviate our nuclear activities, why does it support the Zionists, who have 400 nuclear warheads?” he said during a press conference on the sidelines of the climate summit on Friday.

Ahmadinejad added, “This is the double standard that has failed and cannot be continued. They should revise their behavior.”

He also said that the veto power of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council is “cruel” and certain powers, who regard themselves as owners of the world, are imposing it on other nations.

Ahmadinejad noted that the United States and Europe have nuclear power plants but they do not want Iran to have nuclear power plants and regard its peaceful nuclear program as an attempt to produce nuclear weapons.

The Westerners claim that the international community is opposed to Iran’s nuclear activities whereas 119 members of the Non-Aligned Movement and all Islamic countries have expressed support for Iran’s nuclear program, he added.

“Only a few European countries and the United States are opposed to Iran’s nuclear activities. Are these to be considered the international community?”

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ahmadinejad said he is still hopeful that that U.S. President Barack Obama will act on his slogan of change.

“We have not become disappointed yet, even though sending more soldiers to Afghanistan is a continuation of Bush’s policies and the officials of the United States still consider themselves the owners of the world.”
