EU provides 7 million euros for Lao, Vietnamese and Cambodian victims of Ketsana

(KPL) The European Union (EU) has decided to provide new funds 2.2 million euros for victims of Typhoon Ketsana in southern provinces of the Lao PDR through humanitarian projects, according to the European Union Delegation to Laos.
A press release of the Laos-based European Commission Delegation disclosed yesterday that it was providing additional seven million euros in humanitarian aid to help victims of Typhoon Ketsana and Mirinae in South East Asia. Meanwhile a news source quoting EU’s press release says that the new funds are for humanitarian aid projects to assist the most affected people in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. This support is fresh funding in addition to the two million euros in fast-track funding provided by the commission within 48 hours of Typhoon Ketsana hitting the Central Vietnamese coast and subsequently Laos and Cambodia on 29 September.
These new funds are being allocated to humanitarian projects for the Lao PDR worth 2.2 million euros, which will be channeled through partner Non-Government Organisations (NGO) and UN Agency. The four projects envisaged for supporting multi-sectoral assistance (food, livelihood, disaster preparedness), rehabilitation of schools in Attapeu province, providing water sanitation and health and food for Savannakhet, Saravane, Sekong and Attapeu provinces.
“This added funding will mainly respond to the need of further humanitarian assistance, in sectors such as food and non-food items, shelter, water and sanitation, livelihood rehabilitation and health care. I hope that this new assistance will help the most affected populations in Laos restore their living condition” said Mr Henry Parkerd, Charge d’Affaires of the Delegation of the European Union to Laos.
Recently the EU has already supported 400,000 euros for Laos in fast-track humanitarian aid to victims of Ketsana for food and fundamental emergency needs of the affected people in southern provinces.
Typhoon Ketsana killed 17 Lao people in central and southern provinces with over 175,000 families affected, and the damage is estimated at 1,800 billion kip. Ketsana hit the central province of Savannakhet, and the southern provinces of Saravane, Attapeu, Sekong and Champassak.
