TANGERANG ALSO DEVELOPING ORGANIC RICE

Tangerang, June 10 (ANTARA) - The Tangerang regency administration, in this case its agricultural and livestock breeding agency, is developing organic rice to promote food security.

It is raised with the use of organic fertilizer, Tangerang Deputy Regent Rano Karno said on Tuesday.

Rano Karno said the organic fertilizer is called Agrodyke, and it appears to be very friendly to the environment after being tested, and later certified.

To optimize the production of organic rice, the Tangerang regency administration cooperates with an well-experienced fertilizer producer in testing the technology to be applied to raising the organic rice.

The agricultural and livestock breeding agency will try to apply the organic fertilizer on 12 hectares of experimental plots of land in 20 different subdistricts in Tangerang regency involving 540 farmers who are grouped in 18 farmers' groups.

The paddy planting in the experimental plots of land will take place until the September 2008 planting season.

The former senior actor said that idea to raise the rice on organic fertilized experimental plots of land was prompted by the success of similar projects in some regions.

The result of the experiment proved that the application of organic fertilization technology could save up to 50 percent of the normal production cost, the crops became pest-proof, and production increased from 4.2 tons to 9.2 tons per hectare in each planting season.
