SCOMI DELIVERS FIRST MONORAIL CAR TO MUMBAI
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysia-based investment holding company
Scomi Group has delivered the first monorail car for the RM1.85 billion
(US$545.29 million) Mumbai monorail project last Saturday.
In a statement here Tuesday, Scomi said under the contract secured in
November 2008, it and its consortium partner, Larsen & Toubro, were given 30
months to complete the first monorail project.
Scomi India country president, Suhaimi Yaacob, said under the contract,
Scomi would deliver a total of 60 cars to make up 15 sets of four-car trains.
"The timely delivery of the first car is a reflection of our capabilities,
commitment and reliability in meeting our key milestones exactly as planned to
meet the client requirements," he said.
Suhaimi said as its facility in Kuala Lumpur has the capacity to handle two
more projects concurrently, Scomi planned to expand its manufacturing expertise
into other emerging markets where demand for its transportation solution arises.
He said the company also targeted other segments like the low-floor city
buses that run on compressed natural gas as part of its complementary business
model to contribute to the Indian urban transportation growth.
"With our recent recruitment drive in India, we have begun the second stage
of expansion.
"We are also conducting special skills training in the areas of operations
and maintenance to ensure quality workforce before the inaugural monorail
service in India by year-end," he said.
