Weather conditions across Kazakhstan

Almaty, January 08, 2010 (Khabar) - 7 people who spent more than two days in a snow-covered steppe were found in the Mangystau region. Thus, all of 16 people who were reported missing have been rescued. 40 people were searching for the people who got lost and 13 units of amphibious vehicles and a helicopter were involved in the rescue operations. They were found at dawn fifty kilometers to the east of the “Beineu” village. As it turned out, the travelers’ car had broken down due to which they got stuck in the steppe.
Due to frost, which holds on in the Pavlodar region for several days so far, resulted in deserted streets, frozen cars at parking lots and people wearing heavy winter-ware. However, weathermen warned that the climax of the cold is yet to come. According to the weather forecasts, the temperature is expected to decrease up to sub 40 degrees in the next couple of days in the region.

Serik Koshkarbayev, rapid response service chief, Regional Emergency Situations Department:
- All the equipment, forces, assets, emergency response units and territorial subdivisions of Emergency Situations Ministry are being on high alert. So we are ready for accident situations.

“Kazgidromet” reported a storm warning in the South Kazakhstan, East Kazakhstan and Almaty regions. Avalanches are expected to take place in the next few days due to heavy snowfall and high snow-cover height which exceeds the norm by 30-70% in mountainous areas of these regions.

Marzhan Kusainova, senior weather forecaster, Weather Forecast department, Kazhydromet:
- We don’t recommend going to the mountains in order not to trigger avalanches. We also ask people to wait a little while to travel outside the city as it can be dangerous due to slippery road conditions.

“Kazgidromet” specialists assessed the current winter conditions and noted that no weather anomalies have been registered in the country yet. Weather-forecasters also stated that spring will come in time in Kazakhstan. Atyrau, Mangystau and Kyzyolrda regions will be the warmest ones while it will be most rainy in the West Kazakhstan, North Kazakhstan and Akmola regions.
