VP: WATER TO BE CATEGORIZED AS BASIC COMMODITY

Mataram, W Nusa Tenggara, June 12 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said water would as of this year be officially categorized as a basic commodity.
"Commodities which are so far categorized as basic needs are rice, sugar, flour and cooking oil while water was overlooked," the vice president said when dedicating a standard water network and a drinking water supply system in Sumbawa Besar town here Thursday.
The vice president who was on the occasion accompanied by West Nusa Tenggara Governor H. Lalu Serinata said, "we will face hardship without water as, for instance, cooking rice needs water".
"If we have water with a little rice, we still can make porridge to eat. No water means no life," he said.
According to the vice president, everyone needs water as he or she needs it to drink, take a bath and pray.
West Nusa Tenggara has enough water but it has yet to have a water processing system and the province has much water but a lot of it (water) is disposed of in the sea.
"In foreign countries like Japan, water can be used for taking a bath five times (with the same water), meaning that the used water is filtered until it is clean and used again for taking a bath. Meanwhile, we use water for taking a bath only once," he said.
Meanwhile, the West Nusa Tenggara Governor said that the Drinking Water Suplly System in Sumbawa Besar was set up to increase the water production capacity in an effort to improve services to the people and sanitize the local water works.
After being processed, the clean water was expected to be distributed to Sumbawa Besar town to serve 14,500 people.

"Besides distribution to Sumbawa Besar, the water is sent to Moyo Hilir and Moyo Utara to serve 10,000 people and to Semongkat village for 1,828 people, Brang Paket for 2,948 people and Perung village for 1,434 people," he said.
